What are Flow & Head?
· Flow (or Discharge): The volume of water the pump can move per unit of time. Typically measured in Liters per Minute (L/min) or Cubic Meters per Hour (m³/h).
· Think: "How much water?"
· Head (Total Head): The total height the pump can push water against gravity, plus the energy needed to overcome friction in pipes and fittings. Measured in Meters (m).
· Think: "How high and how far?"
The Relationship
Flow and Head have an inverse relationship.
For a specific pump, as the required Head increases, the Flow decreases, and vice-versa. The pump's performance is defined by a curve showing this relationship.
General Flow & Head Range for <25kW Air-Cooled Diesel Water Pumps
· High-Flow, Low-Head Pumps:
· Use Case: Rapid dewatering, flood control, moving large volumes of water over short distances or low heights.
· Flow Range: ~400 - 1,200 L/min (or 24 - 72 m³/h)
· Head Range: ~10 - 30 meters
· High-Head, Medium-Flow Pumps:
· Use Case: Irrigation on slopes, pumping to higher elevations, construction sites.
· Flow Range: ~200 - 600 L/min (or 12 - 36 m³/h)
· Head Range: ~30 - 70 meters
Always select a pump where your required Flow and Head point is slightly below its maximum performance curve for best efficiency.
